Watford’s latest signing Gerard Deulofeu kicked off his home debut with a man of the match performance last night, helping the Hornets crush a struggling Chelsea side 4-1.
Antonio Conte’s only positive of the game was a solo effort from Eden Hazard, who continues to play his attractive football, yet even he couldn’t pull his team through this mess. Surely the clock is ticking for the world-class Belgium who has received so much attention from the top teams around Europe?
Conte’s future remains in doubt, showing little emotion throughout the game, even when Tiemoue Bakayoko was sent off on the half-hour mark for a second yellow card. For the Italian, it looks like the end of the road.
Watford took the lead through Troy Deeney’s penalty just before half-time, after Deulofeu exploded behind Chelsea’s backline before being taken down by Thibaut Courtois – another Chelsea player who will be looking at his options.
Watford played superbly under new manager Javi Gracia, with Deulofeu, Roberto Pereyra and Daryl Janmatt all netting in the second half. The Hornet’s latest signing from Barcelona is definitely one to watch for the remainder of the season.
Watford stay 11th but move six points off the bottom three. Chelsea remain in fourth, one point behind Liverpool and one ahead of Spurs.
